RE: Manufacturers: who has staying power

Jayco would be my choice for a company that will be around and doing good. I know that they ventured into Class A's awhile back and gave it up but the rumor is that they will be building them again and soon. Denny
Denny, Jayco bought out the Mfg. plant/facilities and some parts when Travel Supreme went out of business and formed a new Division Entegra Coach. They are building Fifthwheels and two model Class A's. Anthem and Aspire. You can view their products at http://www.entegracoach.com/
Jayco is in deep trouble - have it from a very reliable source. Deep layoffs reduced hours and big pay cuts.

RE: Manufacturers: who has staying power

With shipments like these nobody will be around. This is from RV Business for Sept 08
Motorhomes (units in 000)
Conventional
9/07 9/08 dn YTD 07 YTD 08
(Class A) 2.8 1.0 - 64.3% 25.6 13.1 - 48.8%
Gas may be down but banks are not lending - the tumble continues. I've watched these numbers fall significantly each month - at this rate there won't be anyone able to survive. Wait till you see Oct.!!
(sorry can't get the number to line up when I post)

RE: first time buyer class a motorhome

My first MH was a 99 Monaco LaPalma with a Ford F53 chassis - was ok but took a lot of work to get the front end in shape. What sold me on the Winnebago line is the program I saw on National Geographic on how they are made - what a process. Purchased a new 07 Itasca Suncruiser and am very satidfied thus far. Good craftmanship and like the Workhorse chassis and Allison transmission.

RE: Windshield & side window glare

Window tint and front and fans help the front cool. We also have pretty good size visors that come come down that really help too. There are side pull down sunshades that we have on our side windows in addition to the tint. The glare does take some getting use to. We also wear hats and sunglasses.

RE: 2000 f53 steering column feels loose

Devils advocate here. Did you notice this when you took it on your test drive?? I had a 99 LaPalma on an F53 Chassis and did have a little movement on my column but it waas due to a bad vibration which was fixed.
If it were me I'd take to a Ford Truck service center and have them take a look.

RE: Is now the time to buy?

Many opinions no solution. It's really all up to you. I think that the deals on new units are pretty darned good and the first year depreciation is eaten up by the hefty discount. Most "anaylist" say that it is the time to buy, if you're financing, that's a whole new ball game.
Best of luck and enjoy your retirement.

RE: Who's going to survive...

Speaking of Tiffin I stopped by my local Tiffin dealer to dump my tanks for winter and asked how things were. The answer of course was " very slow", The big thing for most if not all dealers is the lending crunch. They said that to have any lending institution take a deal they must have over a 700 credit rating brfore even being considered.
I was in the boat business in the 70's selling as a mfg rep. - lost everything and the boat builders went down too. This time it's even worse. If the big three automakers are going to go under (which they may) there won't be any RV's to worry about.

RE: Where is the quality

As I have stated in previous posts, acceptimg the fact that your "new" MH will be laden with problems, or as some have said "bugs" is simply ridiculos. Others are making the assumption that everyone who purchases a MH should be able to handle fixing the "bugs". Not true. There are probably more of us on the other side of the mechanic scale than those who can and do everything for themselves.
The OP has every right to be upset - I would be livid!! We didn't get where we are in this country by accepting poor quality or maybe we did and that's why the foriegn car companies are kicking our collective butts.
Lesson learned.

RE: Winterizing our Motor Home

You'll probably get a fifty/fifty answers on this - 1/2 for putting antifreeze in the line and 1/2 for blowing out the lines. For the past three years I have blown out the lines and have zero problems. Your manual should help you on what procedure they recommend.

RE: Are you using that cd changer in your rig?

Back in the 60's my first car, a Chevy Biscaine, had a 45 record changer.
A big old silver box mounted under the dash hooked up thru the radio antenna. Oh yeah, I had Reverb also.
For you young'ens a 45 was a record with a big hole in the middle.
Man you are my hero!! That was my era too and if you had a 45 exchanger in your car you were a top dog at the drive in!!

RE: Un-desireable campsites ...

I must admit there are numerous fulltime campgrounds here in the midwest - I think it's a poor man version of a cottage ....lol. With gas prices as high as they are I chose to inhabit a couple over the last 2 years. It was more cost effective for me and still enjoyable for the family as these parks were on small lakes that offeresd boating as well as camping. We just took off when we wanted to go somewher.
These camps did not support constuction workers or people living there fulltime - ther generally open from April 15 to Oct. 15.

RE: Help on improving steering on F53

Don't start adding hardware until the basics are taken care of. That means proper tire pressure (not too much or too little), proper ride height, good shocks, and a GOOD alignment. A good alignment means getting the caster angle set at 5 degrees +/- a half degree in addition to correct toe-in. Some alignment shops will try and "duck" doing the caster----it's more work for them. Insist on it.
My F53 chassis was "drive-able" but did require lots of steering and did sit low in the back. I added air bag assists to the rear and got the alignment done. Initially, the shop corrected the toe-in and didn't want to deal with the caster---they said try it. The toe-in helped, but I took it back and they set the caster at 4 1/2 degrees!!! Huge improvement.
I've also installed Koni FSD shocks---the original shocks were shot. The FSD's greatly improved handling and also provide a much softer ride.
After driving it 8500 miles to Alaska and back on frost heaved highways, I don't fell the need to for any more added "hardware."
Like I stated earlier - my 99 LaPalma F53 handled horribly. Did all the things recommended here on the forum - had some success but the thing that made it driveable was the SteerSafe!!
I also recall that in 2001 (I believe that's right) Ford started adding stabilizers to their coaches as OEM. Problem solved - for the most part..... lol

RE: Help on improving steering on F53

Trust me when I tell you this - I know by first hand experience with my first MH. Put the steer safe stabilizers on!!! Yes all the other things people are suggesting are somewhat valid but having been there did that I can tell you that the steer safe made all the difference in the world!!

RE: How to check tire pressure

I know I'll get a lot of boo's but I had my dealer install valve extenders. When done right it' makes things very easy. The problem I see is not only how you check the inner dually but how do you get to it to fill it with air?
